by the escape and the dramatic headlines that followed about her alleged relationship with the killers and a plot to kill him . more in a second. >> the weather is the big story. take a look at this live shot of coal city illinois 75 mails outside of chicago devastated by tornadoes that moved through the midwest overnight. al? >> they could be straight line wins. we had a drecho a long line of thunderstorms. winds in the liner were estimated up to 100 miles per hour an ef-11 tornado strength. also let's show you what happened. this is in sublet illinois. there was a trailer camp rv camp. five people were trapped inside. what a mess. thankfully folks weren't injured. but a real mess as straight line winds moved through as well. here comes the same line

behind in a hunting cabin. we'll err from the husband of the prison worker accused of helping them escape. first stephanie gosk has the latest on the manhunt. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it was a tough night of searching. this is a rgugged area with lots of bugs and now rain. this sleepy town became the center of the manhunt after a local hunting cabin owner stumbled across spn running from his place and reported it to police. sources close to the investigation tell nbc news dna recovered from the cabin is a match to richard matt and david sweat. we spoke to a local business owner who spoke to the cabin owner and said he's spooked. he went in and found a jar of peanut butter and a jug of water on the table that shouldn't have been there. this area is popular in the summer with tourists. there are lots of summer camps beginning to fill up. law enforcement are telling people to be vigilant and on the

lookout for anything suspicious. matt? >> stephanie gosk thank you very much. joyce mitchell the prison employee told her husband lyle the escapees threatened to harm him if she didn't go through with their plan. we the talked to lyle mitchell exclusively with his attorney peter dumas. i can't imagine a more tension-filled 17 or 18-day period. how are you? >> taking it day by day. it's been rough system. >> can you describe how it turned your life up eyde down? >> one day 100% everybody happy. the next day this is what happened. just in shock. >> like someone pulled the rug out from under you. >> yes. >> lyle mitchell spoke for the first time since his wife was charged with providing tools to help richard matt and david sweat break out of maximum security clinton correctional facility 18 days ago. tell me where you were and where you first heard there had been

this escape at the clinton correctional facility where you work by the way. >> i was at the hospital. my wife that night said she was having chestmorning i come in turn the cell phone on and we had beep beep beep from the family state troopers looking for us. when my wife turned the cell phone on she said oh my god, matt and sweat escaped. >> authorities say joyce mitchell planned to run off with the inpates after picking them up but she never showed up having suffered eded an anxiety attack. she was hospitalized that nightment the innight. when you and your wife heard today had escaped what was her reaction and yours? >> i couldn't believe it. her reaction -- they really escaped. i left it at that.

>> you looked in her eyes. nothing seemed unusual about her expression. >> nothing. they wanted to talk to us because we though them or to help out. we went to the police barracks. said you guys are are looking for us? who are you? lyle and joyce mitchell. yes, we have. >> you had no reason to ask your wife do you know anything about this escape? >> no, no. next morning she said state police called. they wanted to know about a package. i said what are you talking about? she said i need to talk to the troopers. the investigator said mr. mitchell your wife is more involved than she's letting on. what? he said she brought two hacksaw blades a philips head and a which he isle chisel. oh, my god. >> when did you ask her?

>> that night on the way hope. >> you said did you help them escape? >>she said i was over my head and scared. she said i have something else to tell you. >> i said, what's that. she said their plan was they want to kill you. they wanted her to pick them up. >> she admitted to you at that moment that once the two escaped from clinton and made their way to the manhole that she was supposed to be the one to pick them up and drive them away. >> she told me matt wanted her to pick them up. she said i never leave nowheres without lyle never. he said i will give you pis s pills to knock him out. she said i'm not doing that. i love my husband. i'm not hurting him. then she said i knew i was over my head. i can't do et. he started to threaten her with somebody inside the facility would do something to harm er or kill me or somebody outside the jail if she didn't sfatay with this. >> according to your wife they

were going to kill youer erer for reason what? >> to get me out of the way but she was never going through with it. she said she loved me but she was in too deep . >> lyle's wife joyce is still behind bars facing charges. he said he wanted to speak out to provide space for his family because he's the focus of so much attention. he felt if he tells the story perhaps people will leave the family alone. we'll have much more coming up in the next half hour. >> we just need to hear when he said joyce said she was in over her head. i think we'll hear more. >> and his answer to the question about whether she had a relationship romantic, sexual with one or both of the inhates coming up. >> meantime, another big story. the deadly massacre at a church in south carolina and how it is leading to a push to remove the confederate flag from the grounds of the state capitols there. lawmakers could act as early as

today. national correspondent craig melvin is in columbia for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. thousands are expected at a rally later the this morning where they are going to get behind what governor haily started yesterday, prodding lawmakers to act swiftly to force the confederate are batbattle flag to fade into history. a decades-long fight over whether this the flag means heritage or ate may soon be over. >> we are here this a moment of unity in our state without ill will to say it is time to move the flag from the capitol grounds. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: most of the republicans who stood by haley have stood behind the fight to fly the flag their entire political careers includesningcludeing start lindsey graham. >> the pressure is building to act sooner than later.

>> reporter: people demanded action. weekend protests focused on the flag and ridiculed are from late night comics. >> the confederate flag should be only on t-shirts belt buckles and bumper stickers to help the rest of us identify the worst people. >> reporter: the flag was hoisted first in 1962 by state leaders as a thumb in the eye to the federal government pushing desegregation desegregation. lawmakers voted to remove the flag from atop the dome to current location in front of the state house. while some see it as a symbol of southern pride many locals including hall of fame pro basketball player alex english are applauding the move. >> i grew up in south carolina jim crow. we are not going to stop un till it really cops down. >> reporter: walmart announcing monday it will pull all confederate flag merchandise from stores and websites saying in a statement, we never want to offend anyone with the products

i'm meteorologist bill henley. a first alert weather day for a heat wave and the potential for severe storms with damaging winds this afternoon. temperatures soar even hotter than yesterday, into the 90s. that's fuel for storms later today. storms clear out tonight, tomorrow, not as hot or humid. we get a break, 87 degrees with nice sunny skies. even cooler for thursday. look at friday showers will keep us to 80 degrees and this weekend on the chilly side with highs in the 70s. have a great day. that's your latest weather. matt? >> thank you very much. big event this sports today. nfl star tom brady's appeal of the four-game suspension over his role the in deflategate gets under way in the city. >> people will be watching this one. commissioner roger goodell will hear that appeal himself. you will remember the independent investigation in may that found brady was at least generally aware that members of the patriots staff took air out of footballs. brady is arguing the suspension

is grossly inconsistent with prior punishments, that the evidence is insufficient and only commissioner goodell can i pose discipline, not the higher consultant who did the investigation. if the punishment stands the four-game suspension would cost brady just under $2 million. >> a lot of people waiting for the outcome of that. meantime sean diddy combs posted bail after being arrested for alleged assault on the ucla campus. >> reporter: sean combs emerged from the back of a squad car wearing handcuffs as officers brought him to the l.a. county jail. hours earlier he was arrested at the athletic training complex at ucla where his son plays football. the university says combs is accused of assault with a deadly weapon a piece of weight lifting equipment known as a kettle bell. >> technically taking a swing at someone with a kettle bell is assault with a deadly weapon. prosecutors are always going to take into account whether someone is hurt or not.

if no one is hurt they will probably dispose of this early on. >> reporter: ucla said no one was seriously hurt but declined to give details about what happenedment a source familiar with the case tells nbc news the alleged victim was an assistant football coach. in a statement coach jim morris says i'm thankful that our staff showed the level of professionalism they did in handling the situation. this is an unfortunate incident for all parties involved. so far no comment from combs. his son justin seen leaving ucla after his dad's arrest is a junior defensive back for the bruins. combs posted a youtube video from his son's first game at ucla in 2012. >> this is so crazy to see him actually down there. he worked hard. >> reporter: this morning combs is free after paying $50,000 bail. for today, joe fryer, nbc news los angeles. >> coming up more of our

what to think. >> you knew both inmates well. >> i have been there ten years almost. ten years september. every time i iwent in there these two always speak to me. >> i think they were going person to person doing the same exact thing. >> seeing who they could get close to? >> more flies with honey than vinegar. that's what they were doing. >> your wife is facing several charges. >> yes. >> she could end up in jail or prison herself for quite a while. >> yes. >> would you stick with her through that or might you testify against your wife? >> right now i don't know. i don't know. there is so much going through my mind. >> is she a trustworthy person lyle? >> i don't know what to believe at times. in my heart do i believe she'd hurt me? no. >> your heart goes out to this guy. his entire world has been turned upside down.
